Yes, some roofing contractors will take your panels off, and a few do it carefully. The problem is not that roofers are careless. It is that the risk of the task sits outside what their trade covers.
Warranty: most manufacturers expect qualified handling, and an undocumented removal is the first thing a claim reviewer looks for. Damage: panels stacked on a tarp or stepped on develop microcracks that show up later as lost production. Insurance: roofing policies typically exclude damage to the solar system, so a damaged array becomes a conversation about who pays.
Baseline production readings before anything moves. Panels handled by the frame, connectors capped, each one tagged by roof position. Staged vertically off the ground under cover. Reinstalled to mapped positions and manufacturer torque spec. Then output compared to the baseline, in writing.
If your roofer offers to pull the array, ask whether their policy covers damage to solar equipment, whether they photograph and log serial numbers, and where the panels will be stored. The answers will tell you quickly whether to hand the job to someone else.
